Patty-

Obviously a difficult day for you and your family. It's always tough trying to figure out what to say in these situations. I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through or at least I'm too afraid to even think about it.

Regardless, I just wanted to say Jim had to be one of the nicest, most sincere guys I ever knew. From the first day I met him, I knew he was good people. He always talked to me like he knew me for years and whenever he asked how I was doing, it was more than just a polite greeting. You can tell he really cared. Even during his battle when he would explain all the shit he was about to endure, he'd still ask ME how I was doing. So selfless.

I remember him showing me your new basement and we got on the subject of his passion for racing. I'm not a big fan, yet I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation simply because Jim was the one telling me the stories. He was so excited, so passionate and so genuine, you naturally felt happy he was able to experience all he did. Even when he would tell me about his 300 yard drives in golf, he'd say it in a way that made you feel happy for him. I was of course jealous, but happy for him nonetheless!

The first time Jim and I played basketball together, I distinctly remember his ability to be competitive, yet smile. He definitely wanted to win, but he was just happy to be playing...whether it was for the exercise or like most of us - a bunch of over the hill ballers trying to relive their glory days - you could tell Jim was having a great time.

Same goes when he was coaching and reffing Park View Basketball. Win or lose, good call, bad call, Jim was always even-keeled with a genuine smile on his face.

When we'd see each other driving or ran into each other, with Jim, it was more than just a wave and a smile. He seemed really happy to see you. At least that's how he made me feel.

I feel like I can go on and on about Jim. I'm sure for you and those who knew Jim better than I, none of this is at all surprising. Just the fact that I can easily remember all these little moments shows how great of a human being he was and how he stood out in our community....he definitely made it a better place.

We lost a good one today and it F'n blows. But even in his passing, he's inspiring. I'm going to try and smile more, care more, help more and enjoy more, just the way Jim did.

Patty, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. If you need anything, just call.

PeAcE & LoVe,

Rob Mittenthal
